Brecon install Late Stage

Brecon install Late Stage Customisation facility

Leading outsource services provider Brecon Pharmaceuticals continues its  substantial and sustained investment in the latest technology with the installation of the UK’s first Late Stage Customisation (LSC) facility for packaged products based on  Pago technology.
The new Pagomat 15/120E Print  and Apply labelling machine packaging system enable Brecon to offer a wide choice of packaging options for all solid dose forms, whatever the size of the batch and provide a fast efficient and cost effective solution for their customers.
Brecon’s portfolio ranges from the packaging of commercial products to a full service encompassing contract manufacture, sourcing and purchasing of product, and packaging materials, pack and tooling design and analytical services. Their expertise in this area enables them to offer a rapid response to any changing market needs, from refurbishment or small scale stability batches, through to high speed blister packing and cartooning.
The installation of the new Print and Apply machine will assist Brecon in the application of a label and leaflets to a range of cartons.

The labelling machine is on a substantial stainless steel stand, with a vertical support pillar, onto which is mounted 2 vertical support bars. The carriage blocks for the Pagomat and for the label application assembly are mounted on these bars. The stand has 4 adjustable machine feet. The label is dispensed over a fan box assembly, with the leading edge of the label positioned on a label press down roller. The leaflet is manually placed into a guide chute, which enables accurate placement of the leaflet onto the adhesive side of the label. The carton is then manual located between guides, and pulled down onto the wipe down roller, adhering the label to the leading face of the carton and wiping it down the top face as far as the leaflet. The remainder of the label must then be wiped down and around the end of the carton by hand.
Steve Kemp, Business Development Director at Brecon, said, ‘An increasingly competitive commercial environment has driven most large pharmaceutical businesses to optimise efficiencies, which has led to the growth in outsourcing services. We see LSC as being a key part of our services and our new late stage labelling capability will provide customers with a fast and economic solution for products, where demand is for small volumes or limited order sizes and reduced inventory, which will help reduce working capital.
In addition to providing the equipment Pago will also supply the consumables. Craig Peachey, MD Pago Ltd, said ‘Pago products and technology have long been used in the packaging industry for late stage customising of packaging, adding customer specific language, booklets, leaflets etc to primary packs and cartoned products. More recently this technology has been accepted into the pharmaceutical world to satisfy a wide range of products with low annual volumes and frequent demand. Conventional packaging lines are reduced to very low output efficiencies handling such orders. LSC allows supply sites to produce a standard, generic, core pack in bulk volumes and then have this pack converted into local language (with patient information leaflet) either in-house, or at an outsourcing facility.
